Corten External Staircase, Rotherfield
We were appointed to design, fabricate and install a £158k external feature staircase overlooking extensive landscaped grounds at a private countryside residence. The works involved removal of the existing stone staircase and development of a new steel solution, working collaboratively with the landscaper and client to refine the scheme where initial design intent was limited.
All components were fabricated off-site, with the ramped and raked curved sections TIG welded to exacting tolerances to form a continuous leading edge across the visual aspect of the grounds. Achieving the required geometry demanded repeated total station surveys and careful setting out to ensure the curves aligned precisely within the landscape.
The existing structure was not parallel, requiring integration of the landscaping into the steel design to maintain consistent visual lines and structural integrity. The project required extensive coordination, detailed surveying and disciplined fabrication to achieve the desired aesthetic and technical outcome.
Despite the complexity, the staircase was installed accurately and now forms a prominent architectural feature, combining structural performance with refined visual execution.
