6 Storey Fire Escape, Reading
We were appointed by a main contractor specialising in office developments to deliver a six-storey external fire escape to a commercial office building in Reading. The £306k package comprised a fully galvanised structural steel escape system incorporating architectural cladding panels.
The structure was designed around a central primary column, from which each flight and landing was suspended, creating a vertically integrated system within a highly constrained footprint. The available installation space was extremely limited, requiring careful sequencing and disciplined on-site coordination.
Achieving accurate levels across six storeys presented a particular technical challenge, with tolerances managed throughout detailing and fabrication to ensure cumulative accuracy from base to top level. Due to site restrictions, the installation was carried out without the use of a crane. All components were manoeuvred and installed manually, demanding precise logistics planning and experienced site operatives.
Through structured detailing, controlled fabrication and phased installation, the fire escape was delivered safely and in line with programme requirements, providing a compliant and durable access solution for the completed office development.
